How To Stay Grounded This Holiday Season



With the holiday season in full force, it's really easy for us to get wrapped up in the shopping, the lights, the decorations, and forget about some of the important issues at hand that surround us everyday. I know that for myself, I tend to hide in a little Christmas bubble for the entire month of December, and have end up with little to no knowledge about the current events happening around the world. It's almost like if it isn't highlighted in red or green colors, or has an Elf attached to it, or is blasting some sort of holiday jingle, I want nothing to do with it.

However, with the world in the current state that it's in (lawdddd help us), it's important, now more than ever, to stay on top of things and keep updated with what's going on in the news. That being said, I have started to set these rules for myself in order to keep grounded during the holidays, and not get too wrapped up in all the craziness that makes facing reality on January 2nd even harder. Seeing as it's officially December, I figured I would share some of them with you all today!


1) Take time each day to reflect on why you celebrate the holidays in the first place. Presents, shopping, good food & wine, do we ever really take the time to stop and think what the holidays actually mean? Sure, we see our families more and gather at our friends apartments for holiday dinners each weekend, but the sole reason behind why we do all of this tends to be forgotten. Whatever holiday or religion it is that you celebrate, take 2 minutes each day to remember the bigger picture behind all the credit card swiping and champagne-glass clinking.



2) Sign up for a platform that helps you absorb all types of news in one place. My favorite place to catch up on the news is a website called Baaz! I have the app on my phone, and my profile is almost always opened up in a tab on my Macbook. About a month ago, I shared with you all that I had just discovered the platform, and that I would be playing around with it for the next couple of months. Since then, it's been my go-to source for news and a new morning tradition to sit down with my coffee and catch up on things.


I like to see what's trending and choose exactly what it is that I want to share directly to my Twitter feed (and any other social profile of my choosing), all without having to leave the platform. Baaz not only helps me stay in the loop, it has made sharing posts so much easier than constantly having to toggle back and forth between my different feeds. 3) Don't stress yourself out in order to achieve that wow-factor. Your brother doesn't need a $600 jacket, and your mom could probably do without those candles from Diptyque (c'mon, we all know those are way overpriced.) Sure, those things are nice, and it can bring a feeling of joy to both ourselves for gifting them and to others for receiving such lavish items, but in reality, are they necessary? Your brother will love a jacket that costs 1/2 the price just as much as he would anything else, and your mom most likely couldn't pick those candles apart from another brand in a blind sniff test. Don't compromise your financial status (or get behind on your bills) just to impress people with how much money you've spent. As cliche as it sounds, gifts that have thought behind them (no matter how inexpensive they are) will always reign supreme under the Christmas tree!

4) Do spend more time with your older relatives. Contrary to what we may think, spending time with our older relatives can offer more than backhanded "when are you settling down and starting a family" comments. I find that whenever I walk away from a conversation with my grandfather or another one of my elders, I have a new found sense of wisdom or way of looking at things for the rest of the day. It brings me back down to reality, and makes me realize that the little things I'm stressing over have been experienced and dealt with for generations upon generations before me, which makes it all seem a lot less daunting. Seriously, if you're fortunate enough to still have a grandparent in your life, take an hour or two this holiday season and pick their brain about how they made it through whatever age group you're currently in, and I promise you that their stories will more than likely involve a lot more trials and tribulations than whatever trivial situation you're stressed about.


5) Get outside, get moving, and keep on top of your health. In order to have a healthy brain to keep you sane during the holidays, you must first start with a healthy body. It's no secret that exercise is a great way to keep your body in shape, but there's a lot more too it than getting in your 1 hour of cardio in the gym each morning and calling it a day. Yea, that'll probably help you fight off any extra holiday weight (hellllooooo cinnamon apple donuts), but what about mental exercise? Getting outside, breathing in some fresh air, and challenging yourself to accomplish something like taking a hike or walking The Brooklyn Bridge can only do more good than harm for your mental state. In case you weren't aware, leaving your apartment this winter doesn't only have to be when you're heading out to a bar. Go do something outside, during the day, without alcohol or junk. Breathe in that crisp winter air and remember how tiny of a speck you are in this world. Our problems are only as big as we make them.

In conclusion, there are ways to enjoy the holiday season without allowing the holiday season to completely take over your life and compromise your health and knowledge. Reflect, keep on top of the news with platforms like Baaz, stay within budget, talk to your grandpa, and go take a hike or something.

Your body (and mind) will thank you.
